The Routledge Handbook of Peacebuilding, now in a major revised 2nd edition, is in the process of being published (20th August 2024), and it is available on Amazon and elsewhere.

I have contributed an essay on global mediation to the volume, and the product description abstract of that essay says:

Chapter 19| 13 pages

Mediation and Peacebuilding

By André Vlok

Abstract This chapter – informed by practitioner experience – seeks to assess the role of mediation in modern peacebuilding work. We will examine some of mediation's benefits, some of its problems and determine whether it is fulfilling its potential in modern peacebuilding or not, and how to improve its contribution to such peacebuilding if areas of underperformance are found to exist. The chapter begins by considering the measurement challenges facing mediation: how do we know it is working? The chapter then considers the global environment facing mediation and the challenges that it faces: power, neutrality, inclusion, Global North/Global South divisions, gender, professionalization and technology.
